Competition:

ALSO SEE: By the Numbers Comparison between the Can-Am Maverick R and the Polaris Pro R.

The Maverick R has the stiffest competition in the industry. Depending on who you ask and what mood they are in, the Maverick R either competes most directly with the Polaris RZR Turbo R or the Polaris RZR Pro R. For racing purposes, the Maverick R will line up next to the RZR Turbo R thanks to its status as a UTV under 1000cc, where it will dominate with a 60 horsepower advantage. The Pro R is in another class thanks to its large 2000cc engine, a definite advantage from the power potential side of the equation. That being said, the Maverick R makes more horsepower than the RZR Pro R or the RZR Turbo R, and recreational buyers walking in with $50,000 to spend on a UTV are going to compare the highest level car from either manufacturer. We cannot wait to line up all three to get the real picture.

Impressions:

Simply put, the Maverick R has elevated the bar for the wide-open premier class UTVs. Having the dual clutch transmission’s 14 forward ratios to put power to the ground means that all 240 of the Maverick R’s horsepower get driven to the dirt. It feels efficient, smooth, and lightning-quick. It is also surprisingly tame when it needs to be, and almost mature – you can hold a conversation at higher speeds thanks to its incredibly quiet engine, drivetrain, and chassis. Even after these cars have been beat through multiple waves of guest drivers, our car exhibited not a squeak or a rattle at the end of our drive testing.

This car is a holistic upgrade to the X3, better in every way imaginable except for two: it is heavier, and it is more expensive. Those two things are inevitable in the pursuit for higher performance. Can-Am has just lobbed a fiery shot across Polaris’ bow, and they are going to force Polaris to step the game up in their Production UTV Turbo class if they want to compete. Cars like this make the industry better as a whole. Great job, Can-Am. We can’t wait to put many more miles on it, hunting for its elusive flaws.
