We werenโt quite ready for the summer heat yet, so we loaded up our new 2026 Honda Talon 1000R FOX Live Valve 4 and headed for the mountains in search of cooler weather. Here’s our 2026 Honda Talon 1000R Review.
What we found was just about perfectโpatches of snow, flowing rivers, and that ideal wet hero dirt that makes any trail better. It turned into the perfect place to put this Talon through its paces across a wide mix of terrain.
We ride all kinds of conditions, but this trip was all about seeing how it performs in tighter, more technical terrain where control, traction, and predictability matter more than outright speed.
Honda has always taken a different approach. No turbo, no belt drive, no huge horsepower numbersโjust a naturally aspirated engine paired with a dual-clutch transmission and a strong reputation for reliability.

Engine & Performance
The Honda Talon is powered by Hondaโs 999cc parallel twin, and it delivers a smooth but snappy powerband thatโs easy to work with.
After spending time in some of the newer, higher-horsepower 4-seat UTVs on the market, thereโs definitely a noticeable difference in outright speed. The Talon just isnโt trying to compete in that category.
But once we got out into the mountains and started exploring, the power felt like more than enough for the terrain we were in. On slick trails, snow patches, and tighter sections, the predictable throttle response made it easy to stay in control and keep traction.
The 6-speed dual-clutch transmission is still one of the most uniqueโand honestly most funโparts of this car. You can leave it in full auto and just cruise, or switch over to manual and take full control with the paddles. It adds a level of engagement that you just donโt get with a CVT.
Another thing that stood out is how the car feels on the trail. Even though itโs a 4-seater, it doesnโt feel big or bulky. It actually feels closer to a two-seat car when youโre driving itโlight, flickable, and easy to move around.
Itโs not the fastest car out there, but itโs one of the more fun and engaging to drive, especially in terrain like this.
Fuel range was better than expected. The Talon has a 7.7-gallon fuel tank, but we were still able to get well over 100 miles of hard riding on a single tank, which is more than enough for most trail days.

Suspension & Ride Quality
The FOX Live Valve suspension is one of the key features on the Talon. It uses FOX Podium 2.5 shocks with electronic Live Valve technology, offering 17.6 inches of front travel and 21.7 inches in the rear.
Like previous Talons, the setup still leans on the stiffer side.
No matter if youโre in Normal or Sport mode, the car has a firmer feel compared to a lot of other UTVs in this class. Thatโs not necessarily a bad thingโit helps with control and predictabilityโbut itโs something you notice pretty quickly, especially on slower or rougher trails.
Fortunately, these shocks have a crossover ring adjustment. Honda keeps this adjustment on the stiff side from the factory, but there is some wiggle roomโjust not a lotโin the adjustment. Weโll be messing with this more in the coming weeks.
We also dropped tire pressure slightly from the factory settings, which helped take a bit of the edge off and improved overall comfort.
Out on the trail, the Honda Talon stays composed and controlled, especially when the pace picks up. It handles uneven terrain well and feels planted, but if youโre looking for a super plush ride, this probably isnโt the setup for you.

Handling & Trail Performance
Even though itโs a 4-seater, the car doesnโt feel big or bulky on the trail. It actually feels closer to a two-seat machine when youโre behind the wheelโlight, flickable, and easy to move around.
In tighter sections and switchbacks, that smaller feel makes a big difference. Itโs easy to place the car exactly where you want it, whether youโre weaving through trees or picking your line through technical terrain.
Weโve always liked Hondaโs EPS setup, and this one is no different. It provides the perfect amount of feedbackโyou can still feel what the terrain is doing, but without any harsh kickback through the steering wheel.
Braking is also very good, and combined with the manual shifting from the dual-clutch transmission, you can really control the car. Using the brakes and gears together lets you move the vehicle around exactly how the trail requires, which adds to that connected driving feel.
That balance makes it easy to stay confident without getting worn out on longer rides.
Between the EPS, braking, and the DCT, itโs a very engaging car to drive. It responds well to input and feels connected without being overly aggressive.

Interior & Comfort
Honda keeps things pretty simple inside, and that carries over into the seating and overall comfort.
The seats arenโt anything special, but theyโre not uncomfortable either. They get the job done for a full day of riding without really standing out one way or the other.
The driverโs seat is the only one with an adjustable slider, and the steering wheel also offers plenty of adjustability. Overall, we like the ergonomics of the vehicleโitโs easy to get comfortable in the driverโs seat. At 5โ11โ, the driver had plenty of room and actually had to move the seat forward slightly to get the right driving position.
On the passenger side, itโs a different story. Our taller and larger co-pilot felt a bit cramped, with no ability to slide the seat back for extra legroom. Itโs not a deal breaker, but itโs definitely something to be aware of if you regularly ride with bigger passengers.
In the rear, adjustability isnโt really needed, and the space felt adequate for most occupants. The layout works well enough for a group, and overall comfort is solid for trail riding.
One thing Honda does really well is cabin protection. The Talon comes with full doors, including lower door inserts, and they function properly without rattling around on the trail. Honda is also one of the only manufacturers still including window nets, which we like. It adds an extra layer of safety, and itโs not a big deal to clip them in before taking off. If you donโt feel like you need them, theyโre easy to remove or can simply be clipped back and out of the way.
Like most things on the Talon, the interior is more about function and durability than luxury or high-end features.

Final Thoughts
For the price, the Honda Talonโdespite not seeing a ton of major updates over the yearsโis still one of the best values in the industry.
It does everything you need it to do, and more importantly, itโs the kind of machine you can rely on without constantly worrying about working on it.
Itโs fun, predictable, and easy to drive. The power delivery paired with the manual transmission makes it a really engaging experience, especially in the kind of terrain we were riding.
If thereโs one thing weโd like to see improved, itโs the ride quality. A plusher setup out of the box would go a long way in making this platform even better.
