The 2027 Polaris XPEDITION First Look reveals one of the most significant updates yet for Polaris’ adventure-focused side-by-side. For 2027, Polaris introduces its new NUMATIX Controlled CVT, a pneumatic continuously variable transmission designed to reduce engine rpm and cabin noise without sacrificing the acceleration and off-road capability XPEDITION owners expect. The new system also brings three distinct drive modes and an integrated onboard air system, while the 2027 lineup consists of XP and ADV models in two- and five-passenger configurations.

What Is the NUMATIX Controlled CVT?
The biggest news in our 2027 Polaris XPEDITION First Look is NUMATIX Controlled CVT. Designed and developed by Polaris, the company describes NUMATIX as the industry’s first pneumatic CVT. Instead of relying solely on the conventional mechanical operation of a drive clutch, NUMATIX uses air pressure to regulate the drive clutch.
The system intelligently adjusts to rider inputs and terrain up to 200 times per second. The goal is to reduce unnecessary engine rpm during normal driving while maintaining the quick response expected when the driver asks for more power.
Optimized belt grip and clutch engagement are also designed to provide better control and durability during rock crawling, steep climbs, towing and hauling. Polaris says NUMATIX can provide a more refined low-range driving experience while maintaining the torque needed for technical terrain, snow plowing and property work.
This represents a substantial powertrain change compared with the machines covered in our 2026 Polaris XPEDITION Lineup.

Up to 40 Percent Quieter
One of the biggest takeaways from the 2027 Polaris XPEDITION First Look is Polaris’ focus on reducing noise inside the XPEDITION.
By reducing engine rpm when additional power isn’t required, Polaris says the new system can make the ride up to 40 percent quieter at 35 mph compared with previous models. More specifically, Polaris describes that figure as a reduction in perceived noise at 35 mph.
That could be a meaningful improvement in a machine designed around long-distance exploration. An enclosed NorthStar cab isolates occupants from weather, but drivetrain and engine noise can become much more noticeable when you’re spending hours behind the wheel.
We have plenty of experience with the platform. In our 2025 Polaris XPEDITION XP NorthStar Review, we spent time with the enclosed XPEDITION in a variety of conditions. The quieter operation promised by NUMATIX is something we’ll be paying particularly close attention to when we test the 2027 model.

Comfort, Standard and Sport Modes
NUMATIX also gives the 2027 XPEDITION three selectable drive modes that change how the vehicle responds.
Comfort Mode is designed for smooth, quiet cruising. The system can keep engine rpm down when maximum performance isn’t needed, making it particularly interesting for long stretches of trail and graded roads.
Standard Mode balances refinement and responsiveness for everyday driving.
Sport Mode provides more aggressive throttle response and performance when the driver wants to pick up the pace.
The ability to control clutch operation through the pneumatic system should allow the new drive modes to significantly change the character of the XPEDITION. How different they actually feel from behind the wheel will be one of the biggest questions we’ll answer in our upcoming review.

Built-In Onboard Air
NUMATIX brings another feature that could prove extremely useful on the trail: integrated onboard compressed air.
The 2027 XPEDITION provides on-demand compressed air through an auxiliary port. Owners can use the system to adjust tire pressure, clear dirt and debris from equipment or operate compatible air-powered accessories.
Polaris will offer a purpose-built 25-foot air hose kit, which could eliminate the need to carry a separate compressor. Riders could air down their tires for rocks, sand or technical terrain and use the XPEDITION itself to bring the pressures back up afterward.
Polaris has also developed a portable four-gallon pressurized water tank that mounts in the vehicle bed. The onboard air system can pressurize the tank for washing equipment, cleaning up around camp and other backcountry uses.
Those additions fit particularly well with the XPEDITION’s original mission as a vehicle designed for longer off-road adventures rather than simply short recreational rides.

Improved Shifting for 2027
Polaris hasn’t limited its drivetrain work to NUMATIX. The 2027 XPEDITION also receives upgraded shifting intended to make moving between ranges easier and smoother.
Combined with NUMATIX and the new drive modes, the changes show that Polaris has concentrated heavily on refinement for 2027. Instead of simply adding horsepower, the company is attempting to make the existing performance easier and more comfortable to use over an entire day on the trail.

XP and ADV Models
The 2027 Polaris XPEDITION First Look also shows that Polaris isn’t limiting NUMATIX to a single body configuration. The 2027 lineup includes both XP and ADV versions of the Polaris XPEDITION, with two- and five-passenger configurations available. According to Polaris’ 2027 announcement, the updated models are offered in NorthStar trims, pairing the new drivetrain technology with an enclosed cab and HVAC system.
The XP retains the traditional cargo-bed configuration, making it a versatile choice for hauling equipment and gear. The ADV takes a different approach with an enclosed rear cargo area designed around carrying and protecting gear during longer adventures.
That gives buyers the choice between the utility-oriented XP and enclosed-cargo ADV depending on how they plan to use the machine.

2027 Polaris XPEDITION XP 5 NorthStar – $42,499
2027 Polaris XPEDITION ADV NorthStar – $41,499

2027 Polaris XPEDITION Pricing
Pricing for the 2027 Polaris XPEDITION starts at $40,499 MSRP. Polaris announced that the new models would begin shipping to dealers in August 2026.
At this price point, refinement matters. The XPEDITION already combines an enclosed cab, HVAC, substantial suspension capability and long-distance comfort. NUMATIX is intended to address something that isn’t always obvious on a specification sheet: what it’s actually like to spend an entire day inside the vehicle.

What We Want to Find Out
The 2027 Polaris XPEDITION First Look gives us plenty to investigate when we get behind the wheel. NUMATIX sounds impressive on paper, but we’re particularly interested in how much quieter the new XPEDITION actually feels in real-world driving.
We’ll also be watching engine rpm at cruising speeds, testing the differences between Comfort, Standard and Sport modes and seeing how quickly the pneumatic CVT reacts when the terrain suddenly demands more power. Low-speed control, climbing performance and shifting will all be part of the equation.
The onboard air system is another feature we’re looking forward to using. Being able to change tire pressures without carrying a separate compressor makes a lot of sense for the kind of long-distance off-road travel the XPEDITION was built to handle.
Fortunately, we won’t have to speculate for long. UTV Off-Road is testing the 2027 Polaris XPEDITION next, and we’ll put NUMATIX and the rest of the 2027 updates to the test in our full review.
